Online sports betting increased 2.8% over September of 2021, not as much as expected; online casinos down slightly from August, but still going strong
Michigan sportsbooks saw the boost of a new football season in September, recording $383.1 million in sports betting handle. It’s a 66.7% increase from August, but less than a 1% decrease from September of 2021.
poker saw a small drop in revenue from last month. Internet gaming generated $128.7 million in revenue, down 1.7% from the $130.9 million generated in August.
“The return of football was, not surprisingly, huge for Michigan sportsbooks, as they had their biggest month since April,” said Paul Costanzo, lead analyst at PlayMichigan. “That being said, the 1% dip in the overall handle from a year ago is surprising. Online sports betting did grow 2.8% year over year, but we were expecting more. We are seeing a steady stream of solid online casino revenue numbers, which should continue through the fall as cross-promotions and sports bettors simply being on the apps are no doubt benefitting casino operators. With the recent dip in retail numbers for the Detroit casinos, the extra revenue from their online partners is very welcome.”

Online casinos in Michigan continued to bring in big numbers in September:
- Online casino revenue: $128.7 million, down 1.7% from August
- September online casino tax payments: $24.0 million to state and $9.2 million to local entities

Top takeaways from September 2022 Michigan online gambling numbers
Retail sports betting leads to overall dip
While September provided a big jump from August in of sports betting handle, the $383.1 million was just under a 1% decrease from 2021’s total of $386.8 million.
The reason for the dip was retail casinos. The three Detroit casinos ed for just $18.6 million of handle last month. That was a 42.9% drop from the $32.5 million it produced in September of 2021.
The online sports betting handle of $364.5 million last month was a 2.8% jump up from the $354.3 million of a year ago.
Original projections called for over $400 million in handle for Michigan this month. While future months may see a decline in original projections, they still should lead to Michigan’s first month over $500 million in handle.
DraftKings lands on top
While FanDuel/MotorCity Casino won the overall handle race for September ($110.4 million), DraftKings was the top online handle for the month at $108.2 million.
That mark made up 29.67% of the market share, edging FanDuel, which finished at 29.17%.
It is the first time since December of 2021 that DraftKings took home the lead spot in online sports betting handle.
FanDuel is still comfortably leading the all-time battle with 28.44% of the all-time share, while DraftKings sits at 25.39%.
Another quarterly online casino revenue record
Since online casinos were legalized in January of 2021, every quarter has seen an increase in total adjusted gross receipts.
September closes out Q3 of 2022, and yet another record has been set. The months of June-September produced $350,484,700 in AGR. That is a 2.1% jump from the previous record in Q2 of this year.

This continued growth goes to prove that, though retail numbers see a slight decline, the overall revenue of casinos through commercial and online play are seeing record highs.
