The Michigan Gaming Control Board reported that Detroit casinos generated $114 million in slots, table games and sports betting revenue last month. It’s the best month of May MGM Grand Detroit, Hollywood Casino at Greektown, and MotorCity Casino have had since 2019.

Retail casinos have taken a slight hit since the emergence of online gambling, however, the industry is starting to find its footing.
Post-pandemic comeback
It’s no surprise that the pandemic changed a lot things, which included the behavior of gamblers. Back in May 2019, the three commercial properties produced $125.8 million in slots and table games revenue. This past May was not far off that amount.
Since the pandemic, eyes have been on the industry to see if it could recover. While it may not be at the exact level before 2020, Detroit casinos are still a vital part of the gambling fabric in the state.
Here are the May totals since 2021:
- 2021: $107.9 million
- 2022: $106.3 million
- 2023: $104.7 million
- 2024: $111.3 million
- 2025: $112.7 million
Detroit casinos showcased month-over-month and year-over-year increases of 3% and 1.3%, respectively. The vertical has grown revenue at a 7.6% since 2023, which is the lowest total since re-opening from the pandemic.
Detroit casinos are trending up
All three properties took a step forward in May, which has been the second-best month of the year, behind March, so far. Last month’s statistics are as follows:
- Hollywood Casino at Greektown: $25.7 million, up 1.6% from April ($27.1 million)
- MGM Grand Detroit: $53.1 million, up 3.9% from April ($51.1 million)
- MotorCity Casino: $33.9 million, up 2.4% from April ($33.1 million)
MGM Grand Detroit made the biggest leap in May, displaying a 3.9% month-over-month increase. It also ed for 47% market share. MotorCity and Hollywood Casino at Greektown combined for 53% market share.
Hollywood Casino at Greektown leads in handle
May doesn’t provide a ton of sports action, with just the NBA playoffs and MLB regular season taking shape. However, handle only saw a 2.2% decrease from April.
On the other hand, retail sportsbooks brought in $1.3 million in revenue, up from $336,000 in April. Hold percentage came in at 14%.
Hollywood Casino at Greektown produced the most handle at $3.6 million, followed by MotorCity’s $3 million. MGM Grand Detroit posted $2.6 million in May handle.
June has traditionally been a down month compared to May. Maybe Detroit casinos can buck the trend when figures are released next month.
